The Ruan Phueng (Schoutenia glomerata) is among the most treasured trees of Suan Sampran. It was lovingly planted by Khun Ying Walee Yuvaboon, the visionary founder and landscape architect who shaped Suan Sampran over its first forty years.

This tree is not merely an exquisite ornamental; it stands as a symbol of her tireless quest to gather rare and unusual species, bringing them together in this sanctuary of life and beauty.

The origin of its melodious name, “Ruan Phueng”. Each year, in the middle months, the Ruan Phueng bursts into vivid yellow bloom. At this time, bees arrive in great, eager numbers to sip nectar from its clustered blossoms. The dense floral sprays resemble honeycombs, and the joyful hum of bees gathering sweetness inspired its charming name — “Ruan Phueng,” meaning “Bee Hive.”

The Tree of King Rama X. In 2019, Thailand’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment proclaimed the Ruan Phueng as “The personal tree of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X),” for its qualities so gracefully reflecting the King himself:

• Its flowers glow yellow — the color of Monday, His Majesty’s day of birth.
• It blooms in July — the month of His birth.
• Its form stands elegant and regal, mirroring the King’s noble conduct.
• It is a rare Thai species, signifying steadfastness and the precious richness nature.

On May 27, 2025, Suan Suan Sampran, in collaboration with the Tropical Dendrochronology Laboratory of the Faculty of Forestry at Kasetsart University, collected a sample from this Ruan Phueng using a specialized tool called an increment borer.

The findings revealed that this venerable tree is 61 years old, its rings quietly recording decades of grace, growth, and the unfolding story of Suan Sampran.
